Eye glasses are one of your most important accessories. Your glasses are a reflection on your image and your personal style. If your eye glasses are outdated, you will look older!
You should replace your frames every 2 to 3 years.
Follow these tips to make a flattering selection.
- Select Eyeglass Frames That Fit Your Personality: If you are conservative, you will want a frame that is discrete and has a traditional styling. If you are creative, you will want a frame that says “I am different”. If you are dramatic, you will want a frame that stands out and draws attention. Your glasses say a lot about you; make sure the message is consistent with your personality.
- Select Eyeglass Frames That Fit Your Proportion: If you have a smaller head and face, you will need smaller frames to create balance (otherwise you will look like a mosquito). If you have a larger head and face, select a larger frame (otherwise you will look even bigger).
- Select Eyeglasses That Fit Your Face Shape: Your eyeglass shape should generally be the opposite of your face shape. If you have a round face, your frames should be angular or rectangular in shape. If you have a very strong square jaw line or angular face, look for a frame that is curvilinear to soften facial angles. Narrow ovals would be an excellent choice. If you face is a perfect oval, most shapes will work for you. Simply ensure you do not upset the balance of your face with frames that are too deep or too narrow.
- Select Frames That Match Your Hair, Eye, and Skin Color: Consider the color of your hair, eyes, and skin before you select a frame. Skin that has a yellowish tone is considered “warm, while skin that is bluish or olive is considered “cool”. Warmer tones should select gold, copper, tortoise shell, or brown tones. Cooler tones should select silver, platinum, black, or blue tones.
- Tint or No Tint: Beware of tints, most tint colors will add ten years to your face. They accentuate dark circles, lines, and can make you looked bruised. Clear is always the best choice.

Thank you for posting this. I'm at "that age" where I need my first pair of glasses. I'm worried about choosing a pair that makes me look older. How do I keep it young, but still age appropriate and fun? I'm in my late 40's and work in a creative field.

Hi
Char Lynn, Since you are in the creative field, you can have a lot of fun with
your selection of eye glasses! The
more creative or fun the eyeglass selection, the younger you will look! You want the frame to be the opposite
shape of your face shape. For
instance, if you have a square jaw line, you do not want a frame that have
severe squared off edges. Select a
frame color that works with your coloring (cool or warm), this is very
important. Otherwise, the frame will be all anyone sees, and we want people to
see “you”. Frames that are rimless on the bottom will lift the eye area and make
you look younger! Glasses are a
great accessory, have fun and enjoy seeing again!
